Why Los Angeles water is hard on ice machines

Much of Southern California has hard water. Minerals in the water build up as scale on the evaporator plate, water distribution tubes and sensors. Over time the machine makes ice more slowly, cubes come out thin or cloudy, and harvest cycles start to fail.

Most manufacturers recommend cleaning and sanitizing at least every six months. In high-volume kitchens and bars, or where there is no water filter, every three to four months is often better. A good water filter, changed on schedule, slows scale buildup a lot.

Air-cooled, water-cooled or remote?

Air-cooled machines need room to breathe: a hot back room or a clogged condenser filter will cut production on summer days. Water-cooled machines use more water but handle hot kitchens better. Remote condensers move the heat outside or onto the roof. When a machine cannot keep up, we check whether the setup fits the location before replacing parts.

Questions? Answers.

Why is my ice machine not making ice?
Common causes are a clogged water filter or inlet valve, scale on the evaporator, a dirty condenser, a failed water pump or a faulty sensor. Many machines show an error code that points to the problem; tell us the code when you call.
How often should a commercial ice machine be cleaned?
At least every six months, per most manufacturers. With hard water, high volume or no water filter, every three to four months is often better.
Why is the ice cloudy or the cubes small?
Cloudy or thin cubes usually point to scale buildup, low water flow or a filter that needs changing. Cleaning and descaling often fixes it.
Which brands do you repair?
We repair Hoshizaki, Manitowoc, Scotsman, Ice-O-Matic, Follett and other major commercial ice machine brands.
